History

Five years ago, Kevin An opened up Gamestoria in Astoria/Queens along one of the busiest parts of the borough. It’s since captured the city’s attention by providing boardgames, a fun and safe place to play, gaming accessories, and ample area to rent or host events. I’ve long considered it my primary LGS and always encouraged visitors to test their skills at the store, especially against some of the strongest players on the east coast.

In my most recent visit, I played in Gamestoria’s Monthly Legacy, a 32-person event that’s been completely sold out for the last few consecutive months. The event’s stiff competition brings out some of the most intense match play. Whether you’re competing against the likes of Reid Duke, Hank Zhong, or Dave Kaplan, you’d better bring your A-game.

Formats

Magic is a major focus for Gamestoria, with multiple formats of organized play held weekly. Legacy is on Monday evenings starting at 7pm, attended by up to 20-25 players regularly. Modern is held weekly on Thursday nights at 7pm, while on Tuesday & Friday evenings, the Commander crowd battles.

Inventory

Gamestoria has a full stock of Magic singles, primarily geared toward Eternal and EDH collectors with plenty of sorted singles that the staff kindly digs through upon request. Most commons and uncommon staples are available and set aside if you call ahead or simply while you play through your rounds.

Food Options

Players often grab slices of pizza at Retro Pizza just down Broadway in between rounds or right after the weekly events. Another good option is the New York City Bagel & Coffee House for an authentic NY bagel or a quick shot of espresso.

Transportation

Conveniently, there’s subway access nearby within a few blocks of the store, either the 46th St stop or Steinway St. For those driving in, metered street parking just outside the store is available or you can hunt for open parking up and down the longer streets.
