Dice City Games at a Glance
History
The idea of Dice City Games originated back in 2015, when store owner Jimmy Cooney talked about it at shows even before having a preview event in 2016. After several pop up events, he founded the brick and mortar store located in Silver Spring, MD in November of 2017. This store is all about connecting the 80's & 90's of gaming.
Dice City Games supports Magic, retro video games, Pokémon, Dungeons & Dragons, tabletop games or boardgames, and community events. It also tries to actively rotate and provide support for new games such as One Piece, Sorcery, and Lorcana.
Visit on 5/7/2024
In preparation for the Rumble Against Cancer $7K Legacy event organized by Dice City Games happening the upcoming weekend (Sat, May 11th), I dropped by the store's weekly Tuesday Legacy. In total, 22 players showed up to battle and fight for a perfect 3-0 finish and win a Foil Bug hat. Jarvis Yu, Brady Munroe, and Eugene So claimed their hats after their respective strong performances. I started off 2-0, defeating a couple of store regulars while not dropping a single game. But I could not keep the streak going, falling to fellow Delver expert, Brady Monroe in a tight 3-game match.
Formats
At Dice City Games, the formats played weekly include Legacy (Tues), cEDH (Wed), Modern (Thurs), Premodern (Fri). They also run Old School and Sealed or Chaos Draft on a monthly basis, while Standard, Pioneer, and RCQ events are also sometimes held.
Inventory
Dice City Games occasionally has a booth at larger Magic shows, so this is reflective of their impressive inventory. Jimmy is a huge supporter of Old School, so you can find singles available ranging from Alpha all the way up to the latest sets.
Food Options
The local favorites include Frankly...Pizza! (wood-fired pies), Pho & Banh Mi Saigonese, Methi Indian (across the parking lot), Nut House Pizza (Kosher pizza across the street), The Limerick Pub (Irish Pub), & Wong Gee Asian Restaurant (Chinese comfort food).
Transportation
Getting to Dice City Games is surprisingly easy by DC's Metro Red Line. They're located at the Wheaton stop, which is only the 4th stop outside of Washington, DC - roughly 30-40 minutes of travel time. There seemed to also be ample parking in the lot in front of the store as well as directly behind it.
